Mudbox Lesson 2: Creating Definition With Layers

During this lesson on Mudbox we learnt how to use different layers in order to gradually build up definition to a model. To do this we experimented with creating hair on a human head.

After creating the basic shape of the hair line, we begin to fill in the detail by using a finer sculpting tool to define the hair strands.

By building up the layers you can create a realistic looking head of hair, however adding too much can often make the model look too messy and create the opposite effect you are looking for. Using the layer system is a great technique when it comes to deffinition, and will be a core technique when it comes to modeling a character.
